Platform as a Service...

Software as a Service (SaaS) is not an entirely new concept. This term has simply replaced the term Application Service Provider (ASP) and also taken into account emerging market trends (mainly the availability of full-featured web applications). What I find interesting is SalesForce.com's announcement of Force.com. This "Platform as a Service" (PaaS?) takes the idea of SaaS one step further. To be launched on Monday, this service allows the end user to create databases, user interfaces and logic for an application using a single platform. I would imagine that the corporate weekend warrior types are going to be all over this one. Here's a fairly non-descriptive infographic on the new service...

Force.com The real allure of this service is its integration with the existing AppExchange platform that SalesForce.com already offers. There are competitors in this space, of course. I have used Coghead's system and find it to be difficult to use (at first) but a truly powerful tool once the underlying nuances of the system are understood.
